We provide work related training in our ceramic workshop in Crumlin. We make a variety of ceramic items which we sell to retailers in Cardiff. Our well equipped ceramic studio is staffed by experienced, highly trained ceramists and support workers. We operate on a high staff to student ratio, which ensures that individual needs are met. Each student has a training plan which is reviewed on a regular basis.

Ichthus Ceramics began working in partnership with Working Links in August 2010. People who are long term unemployed are referred to us by Working Links for work related training.

Our trainees learn basic ceramic processes and graduate to more skilled work as the course progresses. They are taken through the complete process, starting with pouring the moulds, moving on to finishing the pieces with glazes. No special skills or aptitudes are needed and everyone is supported according to
their needs.

On completion of the course the students will have gained an OCN Level 1 qualification in Health and Safety and will have made a variety of ceramics, which they can take home.

Our students are trained to use the slip pouring equipment, spray booth, Jigger Jolly machine and kilns. Health and safety, team working and quality control are some of the disciplines our students are taught.

We consolidate the skills learnt by taking our students through O.C.N qualifications. We will show you how to use these.

You will find it easy to learn new things.

There is a multitude of other skills to be gained in working with ceramics, such as glazing, fettling, mould making, and design work. People quickly gain confidence and are soon fulfilling a valuable role within the organisation.

Garrod has been trained to apply glazes using a brush. Garrod volunteers for us, glazing the Christmas trees and snails.

“I like coming to crafts for Everyone to meet up with my friends. I feel good glazing the trees and snails, I know I am helping.”

Raymond attends college but comes to CFE once a week for work experience.

“I like coming to CFE. I like the mess and the trainers are good and I have learnt lots of new things. I hope to have a job here when I leave college.”

We will show you how to use this equipment.
